Los jaguares del Amazonas desafían el agua en busca de alimentos a medida que disminuyen los recursos forestales.

Una nueva investigación de WWF ha determinado que el jaguar del Amazonas ha cambiado su comportamiento, pasando a cazar mariscos en lugar de comer animales salvajes para garantizar un suministro de proteínas.

La Reserva de Biodiversidad Maraca-Jipioca en el norteño estado brasileño de Amapá es una de las mayores concentraciones de jaguares amazónicos. Investigadores del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza (WWF) han descubierto un cambio de comportamiento distintivo de los jaguares en esta área.

Ha habido muchos casos registrados de jaguares que ingresan al agua para pescar, pero en la reserva de Maraca-Jipioca, los científicos descubrieron que consumen activamente más pescado en sus dietas diarias.

Las estadísticas de los científicos muestran que en esta área de 600    km2 viven hasta 27 individuos, lo que equivale a 6 animales en un área de 100 km2. Por lo general, en un área de este tipo, solo viven entre 2 y 4 personas. Esto demuestra que la reserva tiene una abundante fuente de alimento para los jaguares.

Los científicos colocaron el localizador colocando un collar en el leopardo después de la sedación. Cada movimiento del leopardo se enviará al sistema informático y se utilizará como información para evitar conflictos con los humanos.
