San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel appears to be unhappy with his role on the offense, even after a season-saving victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
Deebo Samuel had a quiet day in Sunday’s win, catching two passes for 22 yards to go along with 13 rushing yards on five carries. But the 49ers executed their offensive gameplan to near-perfection anyway, putting up 38 points on the Bears to improve to 6-7 on the year.
On Monday, the 28-year-old Samuel took to X/Twitter to address the notion that he’s “struggling” on offense. The 49ers star called out his team by writing, “Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!!” with a shrugging emoji.
Wanting to clarify that he doesn’t have problems with his teammates, Deebo Samuel followed up his initial post with this message:
It has been a frustrating season for Samuel, who has just 40 receptions for 553 yards, one touchdown and 92 rushing yards (one rushing score) on 32 carries. He’s averaging 46.1 receiving yards per game, the lowest mark of his career.
With star running back Christian McCaffrey playing just four games and wideout Brandon Aiyuk suiting up for seven, the door opened for Deebo Samuel to have an increased role in the offense.
But with those players absent for most of the year, Jauan Jennings has taken advantage of the opportunities with 57 receptions for 774 yards and six touchdowns.
2025 will be the final year of Deebo Samuel’s contract, and one shouldn’t be surprised if he’s cut or trade in the offseason. The cap-strapped 49ers have Jennings and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall ready to step up at wideout if Samuel departs.
Don’t forget that he requested a trade from San Fran in the 2022 offseason before agreeing to a three-year extension. With Samuel unhappy about his role, he might even embrace a fresh start in 2025.
